Goal: |
Increased Presence at Conventions |
How: |
Activism is what connects JSA to the real world and allows delegates to apply the values and principles of this organization to life outside of JSA. The department has done fantastic work this year, and next year I hope to continue their efforts to identify and deal with the various ways that we can diversify JSA. Next year, I want to further incorporate activism into conventions. We can do this by bringing Fight Apathy to Conventions! Handing out stickers to delegates during nighttime activities and having a huge poster where they can put their stickers would not only be a way to increase the amount of discussion among delegates outside of debates during conventions, but also a way to raise awareness and enthusiasm for the Fight Apathy initiative as a whole. Next year, I’d also like to explore more initiatives like letter writing campaigns, such as writing to children in hospitals or letters to veterans. I’d also like to host voter registration drives at conventions during political fair or the organizational block, staying true to the mission of both activism and JSA itself.
The 2019-2020 school year provides an unique opportunity for the activism department: the 2020 presidential election. Next year, I want activism agents to collaborate with the Publicity department and release up-to-date information about the 2020 candidates and their campaigns. Additionally, I want agents to create guides for getting involved in political campaigns as high schoolers so that delegates have tools to be civically engaged while being unable to vote. Similarly, next year I also want to create new regional activism agents. These agents would make guides for chapters each month, listing opportunities for community service and activism in each region, that can be sent out to chapters via CIA and publicized on the NorCal Instagram. This would establish four new cabinet positions and help strengthen each delegate's opportunity to engage in activism initiatives. I hope to bring on agents to work in their respective regions so that they are genuinely excited about finding quality community service and activism opportunities. |
Why: |
Implementing Fight Apathy at conventions would strengthen its popularity and efficacy on a chapter level. When people see how successful Fight Apathy can be, they will want to implement it at their schools. Having Activism release information about candidates will give delegates the opportunity to engage in the political world and in our democracy. Updated information and current events are great ways to keep JSAers interested and engaged in activism initiatives. Activism is such an important part of JSA, and next year I hope to continue the trajectory from this year and continue to grow and strengthen the department.
